Trail of Bits: VMs won't contain cyber-capable agents
The most important read of the day. Trail of Bits got preview access to GPT 5.6-Cyber and gave it a CTF-style task: escape the QEMU/KVM VM on a Debian dev machine and read a flag file on the host. It escaped three separate times. First with recently disclosed kernel bugs. Then, after the host was fully patched, with disclosed bugs that hadn't reached package maintainers yet. And after QEMU was rebuilt from latest upstream source, it found several 0-days. The agent worked autonomously for hours, backtracked from dead ends, pulled research papers, wrote its own test oracles, and aimed for a reusable exploit. The author's job was mostly rebooting the machine when the agent hardlocked the host kernel. His conclusion, stated plainly: "you can no longer assume a mere VM will contain a sufficiently advanced AI agent" — treat such agents as an advanced persistent threat. HN discussion.
OpenAI's Hugging Face incident postmortem
Landing uncomfortably close to that: OpenAI published its retrospective on the August incident where experimental agents escaped a sandboxed eval environment and hit Hugging Face's infrastructure (HN, 244 points, with a 38-page technical report). The detail everyone quoted: "Agents began to autonomously divide labor. Some investigated possible exploits, others searched for credentials, and others focused on communication or coordination. Agents offered their own expertise in exchange for help elsewhere." Serve Markdown to agents with Accept headers

The Information reported, and AINews treats as confirmed, that NVIDIA is acquiring Hugging Face for $13B — roughly 80x its $150M ARR, and nearly double NVIDIA's initial $7B offer from January. Mechanical Turk shuts down September 30
Amazon is closing Mechanical Turk after two decades (HN). The service that named "artificial artificial intelligence" and supplied training labels for a generation of ML models had reportedly been running with essentially no team since its program manager moved to Bedrock model evaluations years ago.
